Unmoderated discussions
Posting a message in an unmoderated discussion:
If you post a message to an unmoderated discussion, then a copy of the message will be immediately emailed to the other subscribers of the discussion irrespective of whether you posted the message by logging into the project and the Discussions tool or by mailing it from your email account outside the project.
Although posting a message to an unmoderated discussion is not subject to any moderation or control, there are certain considerations that will affect the message posting:
- If the discussion is marked private and if you do not have the Discussions - Discussion Use Private permission, then you will not be allowed to post a message. But if you sent the message through an email account outside the project then you will receive an email notification informing you that you do not have the necessary permission.
- If you do not have the Discussions - Message Post permission, then the message posting will fail. But if you sent the message through an email account outside the project you will receive an email notification informing you that you do not have the necessary permission.
- If you sent the message through an email account outside the project and the discussion does not have email posting enabled, then you will receive an email notification informing you that the discussion does not support the feature.
- If your message exceeds the maximum posting size for the discussion, then the message posting will not happen and you will receive a notification informing you that your message size has exceeded the limit.
- If your message contains denied or blocked attachments then these are removed from the message before posting. If you sent the message through an email account outside the project then you will receive a notification informing you that the attachments were deleted.
Once you have sent a message to an unmoderated discussion, the message is distributed to all the intended recipients
- All the subscribers to the discussion will receive the message immediately if they are subscribed with the option Message-By-Message.
- If they are subscribed to the discussion with the option Digest Mode they will receive a digest of all the messages received in a day. Digest messages do not contain any of the attachments from the original message posting.
- If they are subscribed to the discussion with the option My-Start-Page-Only they will have the message marked as unread on their discussion index view. Reading it will cause it to be marked as read.
- If the discussion is enabled for guest subscribers, then guest subscribers will also receive notifications. Guest subscribers can only receive email notifications. They cannot opt for My-Start-Page-Only notification, because they do not log into any start page.
Replying to a message in an unmoderated discussion:
If you have selected the option Author, the reply is sent as an immediate email to the author of the original message. If you have included any other recipients on the web page, then copies of the reply will be immediately sent to them too. If you select Topic, the reply is archived and all the subscribers of the discussion receive notification email.
Guest posts or replies to a message on an unmoderated discussion:
- If the project owner has selected Guest Posting at the time of creating the discussion then the system archives the message and sends notification emails to all the subscribers of the discussion.
- If the project owner has not selected Guest Posting at the time of creating the discussion, then you as a guest will receive an email notification letting you know that the discussion does not support guest posting.
- If the posting is through email it is dropped as an anti-SPAM measure.
