Yesterday I encountered the same problem with the Windows version of AgroUML
0.34. The error was similar:

XMI external reference error attempting to read:
file:/C:/Users/user/AppData/Local/Temp/zargo_model_2186427374741239663.xmi

I unpacked the zargo file and compared the included .xmi file with an .xmi file
of a working zargo file, both containing state machines. I discovered several
things:

- The not working files did not contain a UML:Model, UML:Namespace.ownedElement,
UML:StateMachine, UML:StateMachine.top, UML:CompositeState,
UML:CompositeState.subvertex and UML:StateMachine.transitions element. All
UML:SimpleState, UML:Pseudostate and UML:Transition elements were stored
sequentially as direct childs of XMI.content.

- Three SimpleStates and one Transition were missing in this XMI file but they
were referenced at several places (e.g. in a UML:Transition.source). However,
instead of using xmi.idref the reference was given in an href attribute.

- The normal idrefs looked like
"-122-91-76--34--333f19c5:14b4f09717d:-8000:0000000000000992". However, the
hrefs looked like
"file:/C:/Users/user/AppData/Local/Temp/zargo_model_2186427374741239663.xmi#-64--88-56-1-1d1b49ce:14b4b85c308:-8000:000000000000086B".
Here, the filename from the error message is stored. I don't know how exactly
the ids are built, but it the first two parts of the id look completely different.

- If I remember correctly I started the state machine, saved it, closed
ZargoUML, opened the file later on again and continued working. The missing
states are exactly the ones that I drew during the first run.

- Interestingly, the pgml file for the state machine contained all states and
transitions. So, I figured out the ids of the missing states and transitions and
fixed the xmi file manually, zipped it - and it's opening fine now.
