We do have two different users reporting the same problem (issue 6485 and issue 6497) so there is likely some reasonably common condition here.

Quite what though, I'm afraid I have no starting point to advise :-(

Could you see if it is possible to install ArgoUML on Ubuntu with something like:
  apt-get install ArgoUML
Maybe you have to add some repository first, I do not know.

Making packages in repositories is difficult, maybe there is a wrong one around
for  Ubuntu?
